About Maryland AIRS |
Maryland AIRS is the Maryland affiliate of the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS), a nonprofit membership organization serving I&R interests throughout the U.S. and Canada. AIRS offers a professional umbrella for all I&R providers in both public and private organizations. Members can become active in the organization by attending national conferences, exchanging information through the newsletter, or by working on a number of standing committees.
Mission What is I & R? Information and Referral services are the vital link between people who need services and those who can provide them. It is a linking mechanism, so I&R becomes a mediator, broker, facilitator, and advocate in the area of human service delivery. For human service planners, I&R provides an invaluable repository of current data on the needs and services of the community. How Did Maryland AIRS Begin? MARYLAND AIRS began in Baltimore City as the Information & Referral Planning Council—a direct result of the attendance of its founding members at an institute on Cooperative Information and Referral, in January, 1978. It now includes membership throughout the State and works to develop and maintain a communication mechanism among I&R practitioners. Who Can Join? Membership is open to anyone who provides information and referral services or is interested in supporting this vital service. I&R providers and other interested individuals from adjacent states are also welcome to join or attend our annual conference.
